How To Choose Your Contractor

Red Flags to Watch For When Embarking on a Chicago Home Remodeling Project

Once you start your Chicago home renovation project, the excitement over seeing your home transform might make you overlook some serious issues that, over time, could cause your project to fall to pieces. In this article, we highlight some common red flags of which you should stay aware so that you can keep your home remodeling project running smoothly.

Red Flag #1: No Review of Your Home Remodeling Company

You’ve found a home remodeling company with whom you’d like to work, but after scouring the internet you haven’t been able to find a single review of their work. This should be a huge red flag because it could indicate two potential problems. The first is that this is a new remodeling company that is just starting out. To be sure, there is nothing wrong with a new business, but if you decide to move ahead as one of the contractor’s first projects be prepared to be a bit of a learning curve for them. If you do decide to move forward with a new company just make sure to get enough relevant references to ensure they are trustworthy.

The second potential issue is that the home remodeler has received only negative reviews that they either deleted or blocked from their website. This is much more problematic, but give your home remodeling company the benefit of the doubt: if this happens, reach out to them to address the issue. If they can provide references you can reach then perhaps it was simply an internet glitch.

Red Flag #2: Your Home Remodeling Contractor Won’t Listen

Even the most general conversation can tell you a lot about how that contractor works. After you’ve shared your vision with them, do they automatically dismiss or correct your ideas? Do they consistently steer you away from your dream to their own vision for the space? Remember that your contractor is working for you, so watch out for any red flags that might suggest they’ll derail your project in the future because they feel they know best.

Red Flag #3: You Cannot Nail Down a Budget or a Timeline

Once you and your remodeling contractor can see eye to eye on a plan, it is also important that you establish both a budget and a timeline for the work to be completed. The last thing you want is for your space to be demolished and then to have your contractor suddenly fall out of touch. High-quality contractors are often juggling multiple projects at once, but a true professional knows how to schedule work, set realistic timelines, and respect a client’s budget. If you can’t get an estimated final completion date and a final figure for the job, then you might want to move on.

Perhaps the most important in this selection process is to find a home remodeling contractor who really listens to you. At Chicago Home ReVision, we remain dedicated to listening to each client’s vision for their space, and we work hard to adhere to all budget and timeline parameters. This commitment has earned us numerous customers who were satisfied beyond their initial expectations. Don’t take our word for it, though: call us today and we will be happy to share references or any other information about our home renovation company to earn both your trust and your business.
